Dental Checkups & Cleanings

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, as well as our team of pediatric dentists, recommends bringing your child in for their first appointment by the time their first tooth grows in, or by their first birthday, whichever happens first! Many of these early visits will be “lap exams,” where your baby will be comfortable in your lap as they have their teeth examined and cleaned for the first time.

As your child gets older, they’ll have the opportunity to get comfortable lying back in our treatment chair as one of our pediatric dentists counts their teeth and checks for decay and other signs of oral health problems. Then, our team of professionals will clear away all plaque and tartar from the surface of their teeth, as well as polish and floss their pearly whites. We welcome parents back in the treatment room as well, so don’t hesitate to ask to come back and hang out!

Teeth Strengthening Treatments

Typically administered at the end of each cleaning, we offer fluoride and fluoride alternatives to help fortify the protective tooth enamel and prevent cavity development. If the early signs of a cavity have already appeared, instead of a tooth-colored filling, we may recommend silver diamine fluoride. This is an FDA-approved, non-invasive treatment to arrest and protect against decay, preserving your child’s natural tooth as much as possible!

Dental Sealants

Brushing and flossing are always the best ways to help prevent cavities, but sometimes, the grooves in our teeth are narrower than a single toothbrush bristle, making them quite challenging to clean. Dental sealants are topically applied to the chewing surfaces of premolars and molars. They act as physical barriers, blocking out cavity-causing bacteria and food particles that love to hide in the tiny grooves and pits of these teeth.

Non-Nutritive Habits

Thumbsucking is a natural reflex and comforting behavior in children that starts early in life. While most children stop thumb-sucking on their own between the ages of 2 and 4 with no lasting negative effects to their health, the intensity and duration of the thumb-sucking is a factor in determining if problems might develop. Our pediatric dentists can help curb these habits before they become a problem. If your child does have bite problems as a result of this, our orthodontist, Dr. Jon Bolesta, can help address them.
