What to Do During Your Child’s Dental Emergency

When a dental emergency happens, quick action can make a difference. Use these simple first-aid tips to help care for your child until they can be seen by our team.

Severe Blow to the Head and/or Face

If your child experiences a significant injury to the head, seek medical attention immediately by visiting the nearest hospital emergency room or calling emergency services.

Toothaches

Gently clean around the affected tooth and have your child rinse with warm water. You can also carefully floss around the tooth to remove any food that may be trapped. If the pain continues, contact us. If your child's face is swollen, apply a cold compress and call us right away.

Chipped or Fractured Permanent Tooth

Contact us as soon as possible. Prompt treatment can help save the tooth and prevent further damage. Have your child rinse with water and apply a cold compress to reduce swelling. If you can find any broken pieces of the tooth, bring them with you to the appointment.

Chipped or Fractured Baby Tooth

Even if your child seems comfortable, it's important to have a chipped baby tooth evaluated. Contact our office so we can determine the best next steps and ensure your child's smile stays healthy.

Very Sensitive Teeth

Knocked-Out Permanent Tooth

If possible, locate the tooth and handle it only by the crown (the chewing surface), not the root. Rinse it gently with water if dirty, but do not scrub it or use soap. If you can, carefully place the tooth back into the socket and have your child bite gently on gauze to hold it in place. If reinsertion isn't possible, store the tooth in milk or your child's saliva and contact us immediately. Quick action gives the tooth the best chance of being saved.

Knocked-Out Baby Tooth

In most cases, a knocked-out baby tooth is not considered a dental emergency and does not need to be replanted. Contact our office during business hours so we can evaluate the situation and determine whether your child needs to be seen.

Lost Filling or Crown

Broken Denture

Loose Permanent Tooth

Cut or Bitten Tongue, Lip, or Cheek

Apply a cold compress or ice pack to the injured area to help reduce swelling and discomfort. If there is bleeding, apply gentle pressure with a clean gauze pad or cloth. If the bleeding does not stop after several minutes of pressure, contact your physician or visit the nearest emergency room.
